Blue cats and Skepticism

by Molly Bentley on August 18, 2010

Well, we’ve finally been called out on our catty remarks.  In our list of bizarre superstitions at the end of the August episode of Skeptic Check, Seth and I mentioned that “blue cats are good luck in Russia,” and then went on to make glib remarks about the existence of blue felines. Turns out, blue cats exist – as we learned from listeners hours after the show aired.  Or, rather, we erred.

One man wrote to say that his wife breeds:
“Abyssinian cats, and the Abyssinian actually comes in blue. We have one in our house. In all honesty it is a blueish type of grey, but the variant is called blue.”

And there is the Russian Blue cat, above, which really is a hue of blue. It seems our good luck is having listeners with sharp animal instincts!    – Molly
