According to Einstein, the flow of time is not real and time started at the Big Bang. He said “people…who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion”. What he should have said was people who believe in HIS physics. But his physics breaks down at the Big Bang, so cannot be the ultimate description of reality.
If we believe in his physics, also then the universe is totally deterministic and “free will” and the unknowability of the future is also an illusion. This is absurd. Though the world is full of illusions, I think that time is real and we do not know the future because the future hasn’t happened yet. It’s not fixed and can take many paths.
Lee Smolin has come out with a theory, also testable, that claims that time is real and fixed, like Newton said and does not dilate as Einstein said. What changes instead is size and everything evolves over time, including the laws and constants of physics. That they evolved during the big bang to necessarily give us the universal constants that we have today.

Richard Muller – “The past exists, we know it’s out there, but we can’t do anything about it”
Shouldn’t he be saying – The past existed? It was real at one time when it was NOW. But what exists is only the Now, as it slips eternally into the past, which is lost and gone forever.
Another question, if entropy determines the arrow of time, then if we cool Helium down to close to absolute zero should we see clocks slowing down or reversing as the temperature goes from high to low?
