Big Picture Science – On Thin Ice

Water is essential for life – that we know. But the honeycomb lattice that forms when you chill it to zero degrees Celsius is also inexorably intertwined with life.

Ice is more than a repository for water that would otherwise raise sea levels. It’s part of Earth’s cooling system … a barrier preventing decaying organic matter from releasing methane gas … and a vault entombing ancient bacteria and other microbes.

From the Arctic to the Antarctic, global ice is disappearing. Find out what’s at stake as atmospheric CO2 threatens frozen H2O.

In 2007, Peter Wadhams predicted that the Arctic summer sea ice would be gone completely by 2013, and then in 2012 he predicted that it would be gone by 2016. Lately he predicted it would be gone by this September or was it last September. The predictions of his scientific hypotheses have been consistently wrong, which shows his science is faulty. He has spent too much time in a submarine gazing at the sea ice, which may be the cause of his clouded judgement. His suggestions for abandoning fossil fuels and sequestering CO2 are comical and ludicrous, if they were not so patently harmful to humanity. Michael Mann, of Hockey Stick and Mann-made climate change fame, recently admitted that in the last 150 years the Earth should have cooled, but instead has warmed due to our CO2 infusion into the atmosphere. Thanks to this warming we know the Earth’s food production has kept pace with its burgeoning population during this period, rather than widespread crop failures, famines and deaths, had it cooled. Warm is good, cold is bad. Peter Wadhams, so snow blinded in his submarine, cannot see to grasp this simple concept.
